Municipality of Nijmegen: registering with the municipality for a short stay
To register as a non-resident and to obtain a citizen service number (Dutch abbrevation: BSN), you have to book an appointment.
To register in the Register voor Niet-Ingezetenen – RNI (Non-residents Records Database) you need:
- A valid identity card. This cannot be a driving licence.
- The Application form for entry in the Registratie Niet-ingezetenen – RNI (Non-residents Records Database). Fill in the form and take it with you to your appointment.
- In some cases you will need to have your certificate/deed legalised or translated. You can check whether this is the case for your country on the government website (Rijksoverheid.nl – external link). Enter the name of the country where your document was issued.
- Are you registering your child(ren) under the age of 16?
- They must attend the appointment in order to be entered in the RNI.
- You need to bring: an original birth certificate of your child(ren), and (if applicable) an extract or official copy of an Erkenningsakte (acknowledgement of parenthood certificate). Please note that we cannot always check and process the birth certificate right away. Sometimes we need to do extra research, and you may have to come back later.
Make an appointment to be entered in the RNI. You cannot schedule the appointment more than 1 month in advance.
Registration in the RNI is free of charge. You must pay the costs of translating or legalising documents that you may need to take with you.
You can only get one BSN and that is valid for life. If you lose the number, you can regain it with a RNI-extract. For that you have to pay.
The municipality will enter you in the RNI during the appointment. You will immediately receive your Burgerservicenummer – BSN (citizen service number).
Please note that we cannot always check and process the birth certificate of children under the age of 16 right away. Sometimes we need to do extra research, and you may have to come back later.
