Municipality of Arnhem: registering the ending of a civil partnership in the civil registry
If you want your civil partnership dissolved, it makes a difference whether there are minor children involved or not.
No children under 18 years involved
If no children under 18 years of age are involved, then having the court terminate your registered partnership is not necessary. Having it terminated then goes as follows:
- You both go to a notary or lawyer.
- The latter prepares a declaration of termination of the registered partnership.
- Then you or your notary or lawyer will send the declaration to the municipality where the registered partnership was completed at the time.
The municipality then takes care of registering the termination in the registers of civil status. In Arnhem, this happens within a few days after the documents are received by the municipality. Only after this registration is your registered partnership officially dissolved. The date on which the municipality receives the documents counts as the official date of the dissolved partnership.
Children under 18 years are involved
If there are children under 18 years of age involved, you can have your registered partnership dissolved by the court. This is done in the same way as a divorce.
You can find out whether your registered partnership has been dissolved at MijnOverheid .
The court, your civil-law notary or lawyer will send the statement terminating the registered partnership to the municipality where the registered partnership was concluded at the time.
Registration of the ending of a civil partnership is free of charge.
The municipality will process the data within 1 week.
