Municipality of Helmond: applying for special social assistance
Please note: you can apply for bijzondere bijstand (special social assistance) only if you live in the Netherlands and are registered with a municipality.
Special assistance is for necessary costs that you cannot pay yourself due to (special) circumstances. Perhaps you incur costs for a lawyer (legal aid), administrator or mentor. Or you may have debts that prevent you from taking out supplementary insurance and therefore medical expenses are not reimbursed. You may also incur necessary travel expenses to a hospital or care institution outside Helmond.
Do you have these (or other) special expenses? If so, you can apply for special assistance. Whether you receive assistance depends on your income and savings.
Anyone with a low income may qualify for special assistance. Even if you have paid work, a pension or incapacity benefit. You must meet a number of conditions.
The municipality decides whether you will receive the assistance. This can be as a gift or as a loan.
The main conditions for applying for special assistance are:
- You have a low income.
- You have few assets.
- You cannot pay the unexpected costs yourself.
- The costs are necessary.
- You are not entitled to any other benefit or allowance.
- You are a Dutch national or have a valid residence permit.
