Municipality of Vlissingen: registering a stillborn baby

A stillbirth can be registered by:

the father or female partner of the mother;
the mother;
an employee of the hospital;
the funeral home;
others who know about the death.

Registration in the BRP

You can register your stillborn child in the Basisregistratie Personen – BRP (Personal Records Database) if you live or will be living in the Netherlands.
The death must be registered before the funeral or cremation takes place.

You can only make this request for yourself and not for any other parent.
Does the other parent also want to register the child? Then this parent must make a registration request themselves. You can make an appointment for this by calling +31118487000.
Has a birth certificate and a death certificate been made for your child? Then your child is already registered. You do not need to make a separate registration request. This is sometimes the case if your child died shortly after birth.

When is registration not possible?

You cannot register a stillborn child if:
You did not live in the Netherlands at the time of birth and were not registered in the Personal Records Database (BRP).

Valid identification (passport, ID card, or driver's license);
If you have it: birth certificate (stillbirth);
Medical proof of birth and/or proof of the burial registration.

If your child was stillborn, make an appointment with the municipality where your child was born to register the birth. It is possible to erkennen (acknowledge parenthood) of your stillborn child upon registration. You can also have your child recorded in your trouwboekje (Livret de Famille or Family Book).
