Municipality of Valkenswaard: registering a death

If someone has died, you must register this in the municipality where the person died. Filing a declaration is mandatory. Usually the funeral director does this. As a surviving relative, you can also do this yourself. The declaration is made within 6 days after the death in the municipality where the person died. A funeral or cremation must take place no later than the 6th working day after the death. The municipality processes the death of this person in the civil registry and the basic registration of persons (BRP).

Online declaration by funeral directors You can also ask a funeral director to file a declaration for you. Funeral directors established in the Netherlands can submit a declaration online.

Registering a death: free of charge

Official copy of the death certificate: € 15,70

  • As a surviving dependant, you receive the extract from the  death certificate and the verlof tot begraven of cremeren (permission for burial or cremation) immediately.
  • Funeral homes should receive the extract and any other documents on the same working day or, at the latest, the next working day.
