Municipality of Koggenland: registering a death
When someone dies, you must register the death with the municipality where the person died. The municipality records the death in the civil registry and the Personal Records Database (BRP). Registering a death is mandatory. In most cases, the funeral director handles this. As a surviving relative, you can also register the death yourself.
The funeral director or you must register the death with the municipality. You must do this within 6 days of the death, as the burial or cremation must take place no later than the sixth working day after the death.
The municipality will then issue the following two documents:
- A document granting permission for the funeral (the authorisation for burial or authorisation for cremation). If the deceased expressed a wish to donate their body to science, you will receive a document granting permission for dissection.
- A certified copy of the death certificate.
- A sealed B-envelope containing the doctor's form stating the cause of death
- Valid identification of the person registering the death
- If the burial or cremation needs to be postponed: a permit authorising the delay
- If applicable, the deceased's marriage certificate booklet
If the deceased died of natural causes, you must also bring:
- A statement of natural death issued by a medical examiner
If the deceased did not die of natural causes, you must also bring:
- A statement of non-natural death issued by a medical examiner
- A statement of no objection to the burial or cremation issued by the public prosecutor
Declaration by surviving dependants
You can register the death yourself. You must do this in the municipality where your loved one died. Make an appointment with the municipality.
