Municipality of Hollands Kroon: registering a death

When someone dies, you must notify the municipality where they died. The funeral director usually reports the death. You can also do this as a family member. Please contact us to schedule an appointment.

We will update the information in the Basisregistratie Personen (BRP).

What do you need?

  • A B-envelope containing the doctor's form regarding the cause of death. This is for Statistics Netherlands (CBS).
  • For natural causes of death: a death certificate issued by a doctor or municipal coroner.
  • For unnatural causes of death: a certificate of no objection to cremation or burial issued by the Public Prosecutor.
  • If a funeral or cremation must be postponed: a certificate of no objection issued by a doctor.
  • Is permission for dissection required? Then the deceased's will is required.
  • Possibly the marriage certificate to record the death.

Register the death before the funeral or cremation takes place. Did the deceased live in another municipality? You do not need to report the death to this municipality yourself. The municipality where the person died will do this.

The deceased may not be buried or cremated earlier than 36 hours and no later than 5 business days after death. If you wish to bury or cremate the deceased earlier or later, please contact the municipality or your funeral director.

You can report a death online. You will need eHerkenning for this. If you do not have this, please contact us. The person reporting the death will receive a burial/cremation permit. This is the permission for the burial or cremation. To obtain the permit, you will need the death certificate. You will receive this from the doctor who certified the death.

Some organizations request an extract from the death certificate to prove the death.

If the deceased is buried in a municipal cemetery in Hollands Kroon, you can continue with the burial registration after registering the death. You will not need to log in again. (See also: cemeteries in Hollands Kroon)

Registering a death: free of charge

Official copy of the death certificate: € 17.80 (2026)

  • As a surviving dependant, you receive the extract from the  death certificate and the verlof tot begraven of cremeren (permission for burial or cremation) immediately.
  • Funeral homes should receive the extract and any other documents on the same working day or, at the latest, the next working day.
