Municipality of Stadskanaal: registering a birth

When you register your child, you decide what the child's name will be.

First name

The municipality can refuse certain first names:

• Inappropriate first names;
• First names that correspond to surnames, unless these are also common first names.

Last name

If the mother is unmarried, the child will receive the mother's surname. If you don't want this, you can choose the father's surname for your first child.

If the mother is married, you can choose one of the two surnames before registering the birth. If you do not use this option, the child will automatically receive the father's surname when registering.

You can only choose a surname for your first child. All other children of the same parents receive the same surname as the first child.

To register the birth, please bring:

• A valid ID;
• If the child's parents are married, the marriage certificate.

Registering a birth is free of charge.
