Municipality of Montferland: registering a birth

You must register your child within 3 days of their birth to make their birth official. You should do this in the municipality of their birth. This is required by law.

The mother, father or female partner of the biological mother (duomoeder) must register the birth. If none of the above are able to do so, then one of the following persons may do this for them:

  • Anyone who was present at the birth.
  • In the case of a home birth, any other members of the household.
  • In the case of a hospital birth: the head of the hospital or a hospital staff member authorised by the head.

If this is not possible, then the birth can be registered by or on behalf of the mayor of the municipality where your child was born.

Birth certificate

The municipality draws up a birth certificate once the birth has been registered. The birth certificate includes the first name(s) and the last name of your child, as well as the names of the parents, and the date, time and place of birth.

Required for the application

  • Valid proof of identity of the person registering the birth;
  • The mother's valid proof of identity.
  • Declaration by the doctor or midwife;
  • The marriage booklet (not obligatory);
  • Certificate of the acknowledgement of the unborn child (if you have one);
  • Deed of choice of name (if you have one).
