Municipality of Steenwijkerland: paying the sewage charge

Please note: You are only required to pay the sewage charge if you live in the Netherlands and are registered with a municipality.

The municipality is responsible for the construction, maintenance, and replacement of the sewage system, as well as the maintenance of ditches, waterways, and the drainage of excess water. The sewage charge is levied to cover these costs.

Calculation of Sewage Charges

The sewage charge consists of a basic rate and a wastewater rate. You are required to pay the basic rate even if your home or business premises are not connected to the municipal sewer system. If your home or business premises are connected to the system, you will pay both the basic rate and the wastewater rate.

If multiple WOZ (Valuation of Immovable Property Act) objects share a single connection, each WOZ object is assessed separately.

If you are both the owner and the resident/user of the property, you are responsible for paying both the ownership and usage charges. If you are a tenant, you are only required to pay the usage charge.

Relocation or Sale

If you own a property as of January 1, you are responsible for paying the owner's portion of the sewage charge for the entire year. This portion is typically settled between you and the buyer by the notary when the property is sold.

If you continue to live in the municipality of Steenwijkerland, the user's portion of the sewage charge remains unchanged unless you move in with someone who is already paying the charge.

If you move to a different municipality, you will continue to pay the user's portion of the sewage charge to the municipality of Steenwijkerland up to and including the month of your relocation.
