Paying the sewage charge

You pay a sewage charge (rioolheffing) for your wastewater and for rainwater that ends up in the sewer. The sewage charge is part of the municipal taxes and is collected by the municipality, which uses that money to pay for maintenance and replacement of the sewers. Some municipalities also call the sewage charge sewage tax (rioolbelasting).

Each municipality has its own way of calculating the sewage charge. For example, some municipalities calculate the sewage charge based on the value of the property. Others base it on drinking-water consumption. To find out how your municipality calculates the sewage charge, contact your municipality.

The sewage charge is included in the municipal tax bill. This is usually sent out in the first 2 weeks of February.

Sewage charges

If your home or business space is connected to the municipal sewerage system, you pay a sewage charge. You pay for maintenance, for the drainage and management of waste water, rainwater and groundwater.

  • On 1 January you are the owner of a house or building that is connected to the sewer. Your rain water goes through a well to the sewer. You then pay sewage charges
  • If you own the property after January 1, you will pay the sewage charges the following year. The buyer and seller can make agreements with the notary about the payment of the difference of the sewage charges

  • Moving to outside of Hilversum: From the end of the month in which you move, you will no longer pay sewage charges. Example: You move on May 23. You pay until the end of May. If you have paid in advance, you will automatically receive a refund within 3 months
  • Moving within Hilversum: You will not receive a new tax assessment for sewage charges until the following year for the new address
