Paying the sewage charge

You pay a sewage charge (rioolheffing) for your wastewater and for rainwater that ends up in the sewer. The sewage charge is part of the municipal taxes and is collected by the municipality, which uses that money to pay for maintenance and replacement of the sewers. Some municipalities also call the sewage charge sewage tax (rioolbelasting).

Each municipality has its own way of calculating the sewage charge. For example, some municipalities calculate the sewage charge based on the value of the property. Others base it on drinking-water consumption. To find out how your municipality calculates the sewage charge, contact your municipality.

The sewage charge is included in the municipal tax bill. This is usually sent out in the first 2 weeks of February.

Paying the sewage charge

Sewerage charge is a municipal tax. Users of homes and businesses have to pay this tax.

What do you pay sewerage charges for?

The municipality uses the money from the sewerage levy for:

- the collection and disposal of waste water;

- collecting and processing rainwater;

- preventing groundwater level problems.

Every municipality is obliged to do these tasks.

Who pays sewerage charges?

The users of all buildings or pieces of land from which wastewater, rainwater, groundwater, or surface water goes directly or indirectly to the municipal sewerage system.

If parts of a building or piece of land are used separately from each other then each part must be paid for.

If two or more of those parts are used together as one large whole, then we consider it as one part for which tax must be paid.

You pay a fixed amount. The 2024 sewerage charge is €187.56 per plot.

Do you discharge more than 1,200 m3 ? Then you pay a rate for each m3, on top of the fixed amount.

Number of m³2023
For every m³ over 1,200 to 50,000 m³€ 0,34

For every m³ above 100,000 m³ up to and including 200,000 m³€ 0,23
For every m³ above 200,000 m³ up to and including 300,000 m³€ 0,14
For every m³ above 300,000 m³€ 0,06

You can object to the assessment. Do this within 6 weeks. Do you disagree with the decision on the objection afterwards? Then lodge an appeal with the court.
