Municipality of Amstelveen: paying the sewage charge
You only have to pay rioolheffing (sewage charge) if you live in the Netherlands and are registered with a municipality.
In determining the sewage charge, the municipality makes a distinction between the owner of the property and a high-volume user. Users who discharge more than 400 m³ of wastewater also pay an additional sewage charge for every 10 m³ above 400 m³. Therefore, two sewage rates apply.

Payment
By letter
You will receive a letter from Gemeentebelastingen Amstelland (Amstelland Municipal Taxes) informing you of the amount due for the sewage charge. The letter will state how and by what date you must pay.

Changes in situation
Whoever is registered in the Land Registry as the owner of the property on 1 January pays the sewage charge for the entire year. If you sell your house/flat or business premises during the year, the notary will settle the sewage charge with the new owner.
If you disagree with the sewage charge, you can lodge a complaint via the Gemeentebelastingen Amstelland website.
