Municipality of Moerdijk: changing your gender on official documents
Please note: you can only change the registration of your gender if you live in the Netherlands and are registered with a municipality.
Do you want to change your personal data in the population register? That is possible. For example, at your request, the municipality can delete historical data about this after adoption or gender change. In other cases, such as registration or deregistration, name change and the like, the personal data in the BRP are automatically changed.
Change based on adoption
Data from before the adoption can be removed at the written request of the adoptive parents of a child under the age of 16 or an adopted child aged 16 or older.
The data that can be changed or deleted concerns data about:
- the name
- the mother or the father
- the nationality lost at the time of adoption
- the municipality of registration and the address in that municipality as well as about the stay in the Netherlands and the departure from the Netherlands.
Change due to sex change
In addition, at the written request of the person concerned, the municipal council can delete or change the data as a result of a change of gender. No actual 'conversion' of the body needs to have taken place for this. The condition is that a statement is submitted from an expert appointed by the BRIC.
The data that can be changed or deleted are:
- information about the name
- gender data
- data on the use of the surname of the spouse, the former spouse, the registered partner or the former registered partner

Important information for after the change in registration
Once your birth certificate has been changed, the municipality will update the Basisregistratie Personen – BRP (Personal Records Database). Public organisations whose systems are connected to the BRP will receive the changes automatically. Those organisations include:
- the Belastingdienst (Tax and Customs Administration);
- pension funds;
- the Rijksdienst voor het wegverkeer – RDW (Netherlands Vehicle Authority);
- the Sociale Verzekeringsbank – SVB (social insurance bank);
- health insurers.
You must inform other organisations yourself that the registration of your gender and, if applicable, your first names have changed.
Amendment of the registration your gender on your birth certificate is free of charge. However, you do have to pay for a new identity document (passport, identity card, driving licence).
It takes approximately 1 week for the details on your birth certificate to be changed.
