Municipality of Helmond: changing your gender on official documents

Your birth certificate states your gender. Transgender people can change the gender on their birth certificate. You can do this at the municipality where you were born. You immediately state which first name you want to use from now on. Were you born abroad? Then go to the municipality of The Hague.

After changing your birth certificate

  • you can apply for new travel documents and a new driving licence
  • the change is recorded in various government administrations
  • everyone on your personal list will be notified of the change. These are your parents, any (former) partner and children. You can agree a deadline with the municipality for sending this notification.

Please note: after the sex change on the birth certificate and in the Basic Registration of Persons (BRP), your travel documents (passport, identity card and driving licence) have become invalid. You should therefore apply for new travel documents in your municipality of residence as soon as possible. You will have to pay the costs yourself.

The conditions to change your gender on the birth certificate are:

  • You are 16 years of age or older.
  • You have Dutch nationality or you have lived in the Netherlands for at least 1 year with a valid residence permit.
  • You have an expert statement (not older than 6 months).

This is how to change the gender on your birth certificate:

  1. Contact the municipality where you were born.
  2. You bring with you:

You come in person to the Stadswinkel for the sex change on your birth certificate.

Make an appointment at the Stadswinkel.

Amendment of the registration your gender on your birth certificate is free of charge. However, you do have to pay for a new identity document (passport, identity card, driving licence).

Do you live in Helmond? Then we will process the new gender and any new first name(s) directly in the Basic Registration of Persons (BRP) of the Municipality of Helmond.

Do you not live in the Municipality of Helmond? If so, we will pass on the change of gender and any change of first name to your municipality of residence. Your home municipality will then enter the new gender and any new first name(s) in the BRP. This takes 1 to 2 weeks.
