Municipality of Apeldoorn: changing your gender on official documents

Do you want to change the gender stated on your birth certificate? Then you can request this in the municipality where you were born. For this, you will need an expert statement. When changing your gender, you can also change your first name(s).

To have your gender changed on your birth certificate, meet the following requirements:

  • You are at least 16 years old at the time of application
  • You were born in Apeldoorn
  • You have the Dutch nationality. If you do not have this, you can only apply if you have a valid residence permit and have lived in the Netherlands for at least 1 year
  • You are in possession of a certificate from a designated expert (website of the central government).
  • If you were born abroad, you must file the declaration with the registrar of births, marriages and deaths in The Hague.

The law only allows us to change your gender to male or female. Changing the gender to unknown is not possible.

If you meet the conditions, you can request the change of your gender on your birth certificate in person. To do this, make an appointment online.

You bring with you to the appointment:

  • a valid identity document
  • a statement from an appointed expert (see Conditions).

Amendment of the registration your gender on your birth certificate is free of charge. However, you do have to pay for a new identity document (passport, identity card, driving licence).
