Municipality of Amersfoort: changing your gender on official documents

You are registered as a man at the registry office and you want to be registered as a woman. Or vice versa. You can have your registration changed in the municipality where you were born. You don't have to go to court for that.

Conditions

  • You are 16 years or older.
  • You have an expert statement (see the heading Expert statement).
  • After changing your gender, replace all official documents (such as driver's license, passport) that contain your gender and/or first name.

How does it work?

  • You can make an appointment with the Registrar's Office in front of the town hall via telephone number 14 033.
  • You hand over the expert statement and ask whether the birth certificate can be amended.
  • You can immediately change your first name. If you do this later, it will go through the court.
  • After the gender change, your passport, Dutch identity card and driver's license are no longer valid, because that information is no longer correct. You must therefore replace those documents afterwards.

Cost

No

Bring to the appointment

For the change you need:

  • A valid ID
  • an expert statement showing that you are convinced that you belong to the opposite sex. This statement has been issued by a designated expert. The statement may be no more than 6 months old.

Expert statement

An expert statement comes from a doctor or psychologist with whom you have had discussions. This has happened, for example, in:

  • the Knowledge and Care Center for Gender Dysphoria of the VU University Medical Center (VUmc) in Amsterdam
  • the Gender Team of the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) in Groningen
  • the Gender Team of the Curium and Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) in Leiden

Doctors and psychologists who are allowed to issue this statement are listed in the BRIC. The CIBG keeps records of healthcare providers. You can find out whether your doctor or psychologist is designated for this on the BRIC website.

Amendment of the registration your gender on your birth certificate is free of charge. However, you do have to pay for a new identity document (passport, identity card, driving licence). For more information, contact the municipality from Monday to Friday between 09:00 - 17:00 at the following phone number: 00 31 33 469 51 11.

You hand over the expert statement and ask whether the birth certificate can be amended. You can immediately change your first name. If you do this later, it will go through the court.
