Municipality of Tiel: exemptions from compulsory school attendance
Please note: you can only apply for an exemption from compulsory education if you live in the Netherlands and are registered with a municipality.
Children between the ages of 5 and 16 are required to attend school in the Netherlands. There are special circumstances whereby children do not have to be enrolled in a school. The municipality can then exempt your child from compulsory education. This can for example:
- in case of physical or psychological incapacity. The municipality then requires a statement from a doctor or psychologist.
- if your child is enrolled at a school abroad
- if you have objections to the ideological direction of schools in your neighbourhood
- You lead a wandering existence. For example as a fairground operator or circus employee
The exemption applies for 1 school year. In the case of serious physical or psychological complaints, a longer exemption may apply. You will find more information about exemption on the website of the Dutch government.
