Municipality of Heerde: exemptions from compulsory school attendance
Children have the right to education. At school they receive the knowledge and tools to develop towards (more) independence. That is why all children between the ages of 5 and 16 must go to school. This is called compulsory education.
Young people are much stronger with a diploma
Having a diploma is important in finding and keeping work. And to participate in society. That is why there is a qualification requirement for young people up to and including 18 years of age. This means that they must obtain a diploma at MBO-2, MBO-3, MBO-4, HAVO or VWO level.
The education officer looks for a suitable solution
Does your child not go to school? Then your child will have fewer opportunities to develop. We don't want that. That is why the education officer will talk to you. The attendance officer will work with you to determine why your child is not going to school. The attendance officer will also make arrangements with you so that your child can return to school.
There may be something going on that is causing your child to skip school. For example, your child has a fear of failure or your child is being bullied. Sometimes there are problems at home. The attendance officer will work with you and your child to determine whether additional support is needed.
It is not possible to go on holiday outside school holidays
The school holidays are there to take a break. If you leave outside the school holidays, your child will be absent without good reason. This is called luxury absenteeism. You may then receive a fine.
Working together to prevent absenteeism and school dropout
We work with municipalities, schools and companies in the Zwolle region to guide young people as best as possible to school to obtain a diploma of at least MBO-2. Or to a suitable place where a young person can develop further. Or to a suitable job. The talents of the young person are central. For more information, visit Lerenwerktwel.nl (in Dutch).
