Municipality of Amstelveen: exchanging a foreign driving licence for a Dutch driving licence
You must live in the Netherlands and be registered with a municipality to exchange a foreign driving licence. You must hand in your foreign driving licence when you apply. You are not allowed to drive until you have received your new driving licence.
- Your foreign driving licence. If you have a driving licence with characters that are not used in the Netherlands, for example Japanese or Greek, then the licence must first be translated by a sworn translator.
- A valid identity document or a valid residence permit for the Netherlands.
- A colour passport photo that meets the national passport photo requirements.
- A health declaration, if applicable. The CBR website (Centraal Bureau Rijvaardigheidsbewijzen; Central Office for Motor Vehicle Driver Testing) provides details of the situations where you must complete a health declaration (in Dutch).
You must visit the Town Hall in person to exchange your foreign driving licence. You will need to make an appointment (in Dutch) in advance to do so.
You will be charged costs for exchanging your driving licence, which you will need to pay during your visit to the Town Hall. For more information, see the municipality of Amstelveen website.
It takes 2 to 4 weeks for the licences to be exchanged. You will receive a letter from the Rijksdienst voor het Wegverkeer (RDW; Netherlands Vehicle Authority) when you can collect your driving licence. You must collect your driving licence in person. You have 3 months to do this after you have received the letter from the RDW. After that time, the driving licence will be destroyed.
