Applying to get married in the Netherlands
If you wish to get married, you must first register this with the municipality where you intend to get married. You must do this at least 2 weeks and no more than 1 year before your planned wedding date.

There are a number of conditions for getting married:
- You are both aged 18 or over.
- You are not already married to someone else and do not have a registered partnership with someone else.
- You are not related to each other, so you are not each other’s grandparents, grandchildren, parents, children, brothers or sisters.
Other conditions apply if you are getting married to a foreign national.
In the Netherlands, you can marry someone of the same sex. You marry before the civil registrar. This is called a civil marriage. Only then are you legally married.
Would you also like to get married in church? This is not a civil marriage, but a blessing. You can arrange this yourself with the church. In any case, the blessing can only take place after the civil marriage.
