Applying for a new passport or renewing your old one in the Netherlands

Do you want to apply for a new passport or renew your old one? The application process depends on where you hold citizenship and where you live.

  • Do you hold Dutch citizenship? Then you can apply or renew at your municipality. 
  • Do you hold Dutch citizenship, but have no fixed place of residence? Then you can contact a Dutch border municipality to apply for a new passport or to renew your old one.
  • Do you not hold Dutch citizenship? Visit your own embassy or consulate for a passport. 
  • Do you live in the Netherlands on a valid residence permit? Are you unable to get a passport from your country of origin? Then you can apply for a vreemdelingenpaspoort (alien passport) at your municipality. 
  • Do you live in the Netherlands as an erkend vluchteling (recognised refugee)? Then you can apply for a vluchtelingenpaspoort (refugee passport) at your municipality.

Applying for a passport

You must have Dutch nationality to be able to apply for a passport. You must apply for a passport in person at the municipality. To do so, make an appointment. Or call 14015 (0031 015 260 2222 for foreign calls).

At your appointment, ensure you bring:

  • All passports and identity cards you possess (including expired and foreign documents)
  • 1 passport photograph in colour that conforms to all requirements. Your passport photograph must not be older than 6 months.

Children under 18 must also bring:

  • Proof of identity of parents or someone with parental responsibility who give / gives permission
  • Completed permission form

The signatures on the permission form must be identical to the signatures on the submitted proof of identity.

After about one week you will collect your passport in person from the municipality. This also applies to children under 18. During your application you will get more information about collecting your passport.

You are allowed 3 months to collect your new passport.

Need a passport sooner?

  • Make an urgent application if you need your passport quickly. If you apply before 15.00h you may collect it as from 12.00h the following working day. Please account for some delay if you should no longer be in possession of your old passport.
  • If you need your passport right now, contact the Dutch Military Constabulary (‘Marechaussee’) for an emergency passport.

What are the terms of validity?

  • An adult passport is valid for 10 years.
  • A passport for children under 18 is valid for 5 years.
