Municipality of Woerden: applying for Dutch citizenship by naturalisation

You can find the conditions for naturalisation on the website of the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND).

• A valid passport or other travel document.
• A valid residence permit. Please note: do you have the nationality of a country in the European Economic Area or Switzerland? Then you do not need to show a residence permit.
• A birth certificate from your country of origin. Only bring this if you have never shown it to us before. See: View personal data | MijnOverheid
• A Dutch secondary school diploma, an NT2 state exam (Dutch as a second language) or a civic integration exam, if you have one.
• An exemption from the civic integration exam, if you have one.

Sometimes we need more documents from you. We will tell you this during the interview.

If you meet the conditions, you can fill in the form for your naturalisation application.

You pay a fee for this service. For more information, contact the municipality.

• The municipality assesses whether you meet all conditions for naturalisation and provides the Immigratie- en Naturalisatiedienst – IND (Immigration and Naturalisation Service) with advice. The municipality sends your file to the IND.
• The IND checks whether you meet all conditions and takes a decision. The IND must take a decision within 12 months. If you have any questions about the application in the meantime, you can contact the IND.
• You officially become a Dutch citizen only after the naturalisation ceremony.
• You can apply for a Dutch travel document 1 week after the naturalisation ceremony.
