Municipality of Vlissingen: applying for Dutch citizenship by naturalisation

Naturalization is the granting of the nationality of a country to a foreigner who requests it. If you, as a non-Dutch person, want to adopt Dutch nationality, you must submit a request for it.
You submit the request to the municipality. The municipality initiates the naturalization procedure, which will eventually lead to a decision on your request.

  • Your residence permit;
  • Your valid passport;
  • Your birth certificate;
  • The civic integration diploma (or a comparable diploma).

If you are married or a registered partner, or you live together with a Dutch partner, you must prove this with one of the following documents:

  • Marriage certificate;
  • Certificate of registered partnership;
  • Proof that you have lived together with a Dutch partner for 3 years or longer.

Note:

  • The municipality must be able to see that foreign documents are authentic. This can be done by legalizing the documents. Ask the municipality in advance if this is necessary;
  • Foreign documents must be drawn up in Dutch, English, French, or German. If this is not the case, have the documents translated first by a sworn translator in the Netherlands.

We work by appointment only. You must make an appointment via telephone number +31 118487000 for a consultation, but also for submitting all documents and making the application.
See the municipal contact page for address details and opening hours.

Personal consultation and advice

In a personal consultation, the municipal employee will inform you about the legal requirements and the consequences of acquiring Dutch nationality. The procedure you must follow, the documents needed, and the costs will also be explained.

  • After this consultation and once all required documents have been submitted, the municipality will process your naturalisation request;
  • Based on the received information, the municipality will prepare an advisory report. This advice will be sent together with the necessary documents to the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND);
  • The Ministry ultimately decides whether to grant you Dutch nationality or not. By law, they must do this within 1 year.

You pay fees for the application for a naturalization request. See for the rates Naturalisatie, aanvraag Nederlandse nationaliteit | Gemeente Vlissingen.
