Municipality of Rotterdam: applying for Dutch citizenship by naturalisation

Do you live in Rotterdam and do you want to obtain Dutch citizenship? This can be done in 2 ways: by naturalization and by option. In both ways you become Dutch with the same rights and obligations. Both ways have different conditions.

For the conditions for naturalization, please visit the IND website.
In some cases, an option is possible. You can find the conditions here on the IND website.

  • Valid passport.
  • Valid verblijfsvergunning (residence permit) from the Netherlands.
  • You have passed the civic integration exam or you have been exempted from the civic integration exam, on the grounds that you can already read, write, speak and understand Dutch to a sufficient level.
  • You have graduated from a Dutch, Belgian or Surinam secondary school.

If you meet the conditions, you can make an appointment for your naturalisation application or option.

You pay a fee for this service. For more information, visit our website: Nederlandse nationaliteit aanvragen.

Naturalisation

It takes a maximum of 1 year for the IND to make a decision on your application. This period may be extended by a maximum of 1 year.

Complicated applications take longer. Your application may then take 1.5 to 2 years. If you have to wait longer than 1 year, the IND will send you a letter about it.

For questions about your application, call the IND on telephone number 088 043 04 30

Option

The mayor will make a decision on your application within 13 weeks. This period may be extended by a maximum of 13 weeks.
