Municipality of Bergen (L): applying for Dutch citizenship by naturalisation

What you need to bring:

• Your residence permit;
• Your valid passport or other travel document;
• Your birth certificate;
• Your civic integration diploma (or a comparable diploma).

Are you married, in a registered partnership, or living together with a Dutch partner? Then also bring one of the following documents:

• Marriage certificate, or;
• Registered partnership certificate, or;
• Proof that you have been living with a Dutch partner for 3 years or more.

Important information regarding foreign documents

Foreign documents must be in Dutch, English, French, or German. If not, have the documents translated by a certified translator in the Netherlands.

Before your appointment, ask the municipality whether legalizing your foreign documents is necessary. For more information, click on verify foreign documents.

• The municipality assesses whether you meet all conditions for naturalisation and provides the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (Immigratie- en Naturalisatiedienst – IND) with advice. The municipality sends your file to the IND.
• The IND checks whether you meet all conditions and takes a decision. The IND must take a decision within 12 months. If you have any questions about the application in the meantime, you can contact the IND.
• You are only officially a Dutch citizen after the naturalization ceremony.
• One week after the naturalization ceremony, you can apply for a Dutch travel document.
