Municipality of Barneveld: applying for Dutch citizenship by naturalisation

Information about the conditions can be found on the website of the central government (the IND).

• Your residence permit
• Your valid proof of identity
• Your birth certificate
• Other documents regarding your personal situation, such as a marriage certificate, acknowledgment of paternity certificate, or divorce certificate
• For the naturalization procedure, also: civic integration diploma (or a comparable diploma)

Important to know:

• The municipality must be able to verify that foreign documents are authentic. This can be done by legalizing the documents.
• Foreign documents must be drawn up in Dutch, English, French, or German. If this is not the case, you must first have the documents translated by a sworn translator in the Netherlands.

Naturalisation costs money. See www.barneveld.nl for the costs.

• The municipality assesses whether you meet all conditions for naturalisation and provides the Immigratie- en Naturalisatiedienst – IND (Immigration and Naturalisation Service) with advice. The municipality sends your file to the IND.
• The IND checks whether you meet all conditions and takes a decision. The IND must take a decision within 12 months. If you have any questions about the application in the meantime, you can contact the IND.
• You officially become a Dutch citizen only after the naturalisation ceremony.
• You can apply for a Dutch travel document 1 week after the naturalisation ceremony.
