Municipality of Amsterdam: applying for Dutch citizenship by naturalisation

• Valid passport.
• Valid verblijfsvergunning (residence permit) from the Netherlands.
• During the intake appointment, you will be told what other documents you need to bring to the second appointment.

If you meet the conditions, you can make an appointment for your naturalisation application.

Call 14 020, the City of Amsterdam helpline (Monday to Friday from 08.00 to 18.00). 
You will receive a written confirmation of the appointment, either by post or by email.

Your first appointment is an intake interview. During this interview, you will receive information about becoming a Dutch national and we will check whether you meet the requirements. If you meet the requirements, you will make a follow-up appointment to submit the application.

• Naturalisation of a child at the same time: €161
• Naturalisation for persons who have an asylum residence permit of indefinite duration: € 811
• Naturalisation for partners who have an asylum residence permit for an indefinite period:€ 1,114

• The municipality assesses whether you meet all conditions for naturalisation and provides the Immigratie- en Naturalisatiedienst – IND (Immigration and Naturalisation Service) with advice. The municipality sends your file to the IND.
• The IND checks whether you meet all conditions and takes a decision. The IND must take a decision within 12 months. If you have any questions about the application in the meantime, you can contact the IND.
• You officially become a Dutch citizen only after the naturalisation ceremony.
• You can apply for a Dutch travel document 1 week after the naturalisation ceremony.
