Applying for your first driving licence

You apply for your first driving licence in person at the service desk at the municipality where you live. First make an appointment. You can make an appointment online (in Dutch) or by phoning +31 71 36 60 000.

Bring to your appointment:

• Your valid identity document.
• A colour passport photo that complies with the Dutch passport photo requirements.
• Debit card (not credit card) or cash.

Extending your driving licence

You can extend your driving licence at the service desk or online.

At the service desk

You extend your driving licence in person at the service desk at the municipality where you live. First make an appointment. You can make an appointment online (in Dutch) or by phoning +31 71 36 60 000.

Bring to your appointment:

• Your old driving licence. Is your old driver's license no longer valid? Also bring your valid identity document.
• A colour passport photo that complies with the Dutch passport photo requirements.
• Debit card (not credit card) or cash.

Online

You can extend your driving licence online. You need DigiD to do this. You submit the application at the RDW website. Visit the dutch-language RDW website to find out how.

Do you have a foreign driving licence and do you live in the Netherlands? You can drive temporarily in the Netherlands on your foreign driving licence. Later, you have to exchange your driving licence at the service desk at the municipality where you live. Visit the dutch-language RDW website to find out how to exchange your driving licence.
