Municipality of Groningen: applying to collect a driving licence

Please note.  You can only apply for a driver's license if you live in the Netherlands and are registered with a municipality.

Do not make an appointment until your driver's license expires in 6 weeks. Earlier is not necessary.

Medical examination

You must have a medical examination in one of the following cases:

  • You are 75 years of age or older.
  • You have complaints or disabilities that affect your ability to drive.
  • You are applying for a license to drive a truck or bus.

At the Municipality of Groningen, you can apply for your driver's license online or at the counter.

For the online application you need DigiD.

  • When renewing: Your old driver's license.
  • In case of 1st application or loss: Your passport or ID card.
  • Passport photo that meets the requirements and is not older than 6 months.
  • rom 75 years of age and in some other cases a health certificate.
