Municipality of Den Helder: applying to collect a driving licence

Is your driving licence expiring soon? Or do you want to add a category to your licence? You can usually arrange this online with the RDW. Is this a first application, an urgent application, or have you lost your licence? Then submit the application at the city hall. Make an appointment for this.

You renew your driving licence online on the RDW website. There you can also read the conditions and what you need. You pay via iDeal after the application.

After your online application

You will receive an email from the RDW 2 working days after the application stating that your new driving licence is ready. You pick up your new driving licence at the reception in the city hall. You do not need to make an appointment for this. Pick up your driving licence within 3 months. If you wait longer, you will have to submit a new application.

After around a week, you can collect your driving licence from the municipality in person.

Do you need it sooner than that?

If you need your driving licence urgently, you can make an urgent request. If you apply for the driving licence before 14:00, you will be able to collect it the next working day. You have to pay an extra fee for an urgent request.

How long are driving licences valid?

• Driving license from age 18: valid for 10 years 
• Driving license 65 to 70 years: until your 75th birthday 
• Driving license from age 70: maximum 5 years 
• Driving license from an EU or EFTA country:  10 years 
• Driving license from a non-EU or EFTA country: 185 days from establishment in the Netherlands
