Municipality of Nieuwkoop: acknowledging parenthood of your child

If two people have a child together and are not married or in a registered partnership, the child legally has one parent: the biological mother. The father or co-mother must first acknowledge the child in order to legally become the parent of the child. The person acknowledging the child need not be the biological parent.

Aknowledgement means:

• you will be given a duty of care and upbringing for the child
• the child receives mutual inheritance rights
• the child can get your last name
